For 3 years my husband and I lived in a small basement apartment. When I say small I mean 1 bedroom and no windows. On Long Island rent is high and apartments are hard to come by so we dealt with it. But in 2019 we were done. Ready to buy house and start a new chapter we started the search. After a lot of prayer and stress, we found what was going to be perfect for us. A 3 bedroom ranch with a full basement on almost 3/4 of an acre. Was it a lot of land, not in retrospect, but it was a great start. We started to convert the full basement into a 1 bedroom apartment with 2 egress windows (because we didn’t want anyone living in what we had previously!) Which my husband’s parents moved into as they are getting older. 2020 came and well that saw trials. Trying to build a full apartment from scratch with working full time, supply chain issues, and a full blown pandemic and everything shut down. When I say that was fun know that it’s with full sarcasm. But we made it. 10 months later a gorgeous new and bright apartment was done. We had been talking for a while about getting chickens for eggs and pets but suddenly a friend of mine, who had 7 hens, called and said she couldn’t keep them anymore. So yes you guessed it. We took in 7 Rhode Island Reds. Ravona Henslayer, Pumpkin Spice, Caramel Macchiato (Macc for short) Hunny, Mo, and Floppy. We instantly fell in love with them. (While Mo and Pumpkin Spice are no longer with us the other girls are going strong) These girls are now 5 and 4 years old so I was only getting 2 eggs every other day. We decided to let the girls retire here and live the good life of whatever time they have left. In March 2022 we got baby chicks! It was an exciting time. We got an Olive Egger named Latte, 2 Easter Eggers named Misto and Vanilla Sweet Cream (Nilla), a Mystic Marans named Espresso, a Silver Laced Wyandotte named Ristretto, and a Golden Laced Wyandotte named Frappe. As of today they are 17 weeks old and growing rapidly by the day. This spring we also got a raised bed from Vego Garden (not sponsored) which we absolutely love!!! It’s completely full with 4 varieties of tomatoes, dill, Brussel Sprouts, broccoli, 6 different varieties of peppers, snap peas, cucumber, eggplant, red cabbage and 2 kinds of basil. I also have a bunch of pots with herbs. Looks like next year I better get a couple more beds! I am excited for the future of learning to can, waterglassing eggs, maintaining a yard and all the fun that comes with that. Join us?
